Dear Mom and Dad and Granny,

Well, I made the trip safely, and have lived through two working days. I'm in a temporary division right now, and am on the deck force. They keep us pretty busy, but it doesn't seem like hard work. Mostly painting so far.

The ship is supposed to pull out of here for six weeks et Long beach, and then back here for sea trials. Then we go to West Pac (which is Vietnam) in October.

The quarters aren't very pleasant, they're small and cramped, but the guys seem to be pretty square Joes.

I think I saw a boy I played basketball with at Van Hom (Ralph Justice), but I didn't get to talk to him and haven't seen him since.

Lots of love,

Michael
